Think Globally, act locally. This saying sums up Sustainability pretty well. It goes from the big to the small. We are all part of the globe, but everyone lives in a certain locality. A city, town or a village. The hermitage is a different matter, since it is, almost, self-sustainable.
The practical meaning of the word is, to restrict our limits. The ways from producer to consumer have to be shortened. The trips of vegetables, fruits, flowers, meat and cars, and other machinery, around the world is a colossal waste of energy. Which is automatically saved by buying local products. The ways are shortened and thus energy is saved. With foodstuff the ways can be shortened without much of a problem. Although it is a multi-billion dollar market, since the market will shift, but it will not vanish. People will always eat.
The transfer of technology is a real problem. Highly specialized technology needs a central production facility. Car manufacturers have outsourced part of their production to other continents. The main reason being, to save the transportation costs. One solution for Light products, as the Ultra Light City Vehicle, is to grant the licence to build to local companies. This is not possible for Heavy machinery.
Another important local act should be to reexamine the present infrastructure. Where can it be broken up from a global system to a local network? This would also save lots of energy! Today one facility serves a whole area. For instance the waste water purification is done by one central facility (1). The sewage system is a huge network, with pipes of couple of meters in radius. The distance from the most distant point to the facility must be built, which means a severe incision in nature. The whole of the system can’t be really controlled. Among the many hundreds and thousands of kilometers of the sewage system, it is inevitable that some points the pipes constantly break and the sewage water infiltrates the groundwater. The ecological damage can’t be evaluated. The TOTEM System (2) would be a valid alternative. This is only one example, many more measures can be taken locally by the citizens. The first step should be to establish a Loan Guaranty Fund (3). Another thing everyone of us can do without delay, is to eat less animal products. And to buy the locally produced foodstuff.
By acting locally, we cut the ways and the demand for energy, and this is the way to find harmony and co-existance with nature!
