Church BellToday is the last day of the year 2012, in a couple of hours we will welcome the new year. And everyone wishes everyone else all the best, health, love, money, luck. Already we have forgotten, that the world was supposed to end just ten days ago according to the Mayan calender. Aren’t the people who took this serious embarrassed? Just a little bit? No? I thought so.
So the world did not end and a new year begins and everyday life goes on as all the years before. And since the doomsday was just a imagination, we will think that all other doomsday scenarios will also turn out to be impossible.
But can we be sure?
No we can’t take our survival for granted. A Meteorite can hit the earth or, more likely, the propensity of nature to regain balance will mean the end for civilization as we know it today. As it is written before your eyes it does not seem to be scary, but if you think about it it might be even worse than a meteorite. Why is that so?
For a very simple reason. Humanity is not responsible for meteorites and there is no real possibility to prepare for such a eventuality. On the other hand, we know, that World Population will grow until the middle of the century to be Nine Billion (1) people and no one has the slightest idea how to feed all of them. If we look at the situation today, we can discern, that many people on earth are suffering from malnutrition and outright hunger. If the supply of food is not secured for Seven Billion people how will it be secured when world population will grow by thirty percent until the middle of the century, in another 37 years?
But this is not the only peril we are are confronted with. The other problem we, as humanity, have to address is the possible Climate Change.
I know, there are people, who don’t take this possibility serious as long as science can’t prove it. But even without scientific proof such a possibility should not be ignored. Especially if we consider how the climate has been changing throughout the history of the earth. If the climate will change it might mean that the numbers of victims will reach hundreds of millions of people, if not billions. This is very clearly a possible doomsday scenario. Therefore I wish for the new year, that the people will become active in creating viable models how to mitigate Climate Change and how to survive when a worst-case scenario comes true.
Beside this worrying, I wish all my readers happy new year.

Much health, love, money and luck to all of you.
